7ε News (2013)

The highlights of 7Epsilon in 2013 were the successful organisation of courses across Europe and India. The review is summarised below.

7Epsilon Course in Pune, India

First in the round of 2013 7Epsilon courses, was the one held in Pune, India on 1 st Aug 2013. Hosted by NCTS-IIF, India, the one day course was held at the prestigious Pride Executive. Mr. Sham Arjunwadkar, Chairman of NCTS, chaired the course and introduced the speakers Drs. Rajesh and Meghana Ransing.

The day saw an overwhelming attendance from 14 foundries in Pune and Kolhapur. 7Epsilon technique of data analysis to solve complex issues in foundry industry was liked. Some viewed it as a systematic approach for data collection for analysis and reuse. Participants believed that the design of an easy p-matrix tool for foundry men will allow them to take corrective actions within short time.

Group discussion session during the afternoon sessions allowed participants to interact with other foundry members and present few foundry scenarios where 7Epsilon can be implemented. Certificates for the successful completion of 7Epsilon course were given out to participants at the end of the course.

Undoubtedly, the day marked a beginning for dissemination of the new approach that would aid foundries to meet their challenges for attaining clause 8 of ISO9001:2008 quality standard.

Few foundries are now evaluating the method on their own in-process data.

I would also like to thank Mr. Anil Agashe, technical director for coordinating and organizing courses in three major cities Pune, Chennai and Coimbatore in India.

7Epsilon Course in Chennai, India

The 7Epsilon course in Chennai, on 5 th Aug 2013 was hosted at the local NCTS office in Chennai. Mr. A. Pari, technical director, CRP (India) Pvt Ltd invited local foundries in Chennai for the course. A range of foundry members from process engineers, quality managers, production in charge, and management from 11 companies including academia appreciated the utility of 7Epsilon philosophy in foundries.

Group discussions were thought provoking and lead to some interesting foundry scenarios embedded in the course material. In-process data sent in advance helped foundry men to learn the course content through real example.

Participants were awarded with 7Epsilon certificates and left in high spirits after some memorable group photographs.

7Epsilon Course in Coimbatore, India

Coimbatore is a strong hub for foundries and 7 th Aug 2013 saw the largest number of participation in the Indian city of Coimbatore. Mr. Jayakumar Ramdass, Chairman, Coimbatore Chapter and his colleague Mr. S. Balraj Hon. Secretary, Coimbatore Chapter hosted the course at their office with new premises and state-of-the-art infrastructure.

Drastic reduction in analysis time using p-matrix tool was appreciated by the participants. The essence of the course was reflected in the group discussion sessions during the latter part of the day. Intriguing foundry scenarios were discussed and an on the spot analysis of real case study was truly engaging.

Participants were given 7Epsilon certificates at the end of course. The first round of IIF certified 7Epsilon courses in India was successfully accomplished.

7Epsilon Course in Birmingham, UK

ICME supported 7Epsilon certified course was held at ICME premises in Birmingham, UK. Dr. Pam Murrell, ICME and Mr. John Parker, CMF invited British foundries.

The day saw experts from a mix of aerospace, sand and steel foundries as well as foundry consultant attending the course.

Few participants sent their in-process data in advance and liked the direct assistance and time taken for exercises. Participants discussed in groups and presented few interesting foundry scenarios which were the highlight of the day. They also received 7Epsilon certificates at the end of course.

A quick photograph clicked outside the ICME office marked the finale.

7Epsilon Course in Jönköping , Sweden

Swerea Swecast hosted the 7Epsilon certified course on 25 th September 2013 in the beautiful city of Jönköping at the University. Mr. Conny Gustavsson and Dr. Salem Seifeddine from Swerea Swecast invited Swedish foundries for the course.

Experts from Cast Iron and Aluminium foundries from Sweden and Denmark attended the course. Discussions revolved around evaluation of data and comparisons with statistics. Exercises and open dialogue was liked.

Some interesting foundry scenarios were discussed where participants anticipated that data analysis using the 7Epsilon penalty matrix approach would be useful in their foundry.

7Epsilon certificates were given to attendees at the end of course. Foundries can evaluate the 7Epsilon penalty matrix method with Swerea Swecast.

7Epsilon Course in Krakow , Poland

Foundry Research Institute hosted the 7Epsilon certified course on 7 th October 2013 in the historical city of Krakow in Poland. Prof. Natalia Sobczak at FRI invited Polish foundries for the course.

27 Experts from Polish foundries, University and researchers at FRI attended the course – one of the largest number of participants in Europe. A friendly atmosphere of discussion led to some interesting foundry scenarios for 7Epsilon implementation.

7Epsilon certificates were given to attendees at the end of course. Foundries can evaluate the 7Epsilon penalty matrix method with FRI.

7Epsilon Course in Bilbao , Spain

Tecnalia, the leading technology center in Spain, hosted the 7Epsilon certified course on 17th October 2013 in Bilbao. The Spanish federation of foundry associations invited their member foundries for the course. Dr. Patricia Caballero and Dr. Pedro Egizabal from Tecnalia organised the course.

Experts from steel and iron foundries, a foundry consultant, researchers at Tecnalia and a representative from FEAF attended the course. The applicability of the 7Epsilon data analysis and reuse was liked. Participants believed that 7Epsilon method puts light on new hypotheses for corrective actions. Interesting foundry scenarios evolved during the group discussions were presented.
